Spring has sprung and homeschoolers are setting their sights on Practicum.
Its the light at the end of a dark tunnel.
The relief in being with like-minded people (by the hundreds) sharing a deep exhale.
Sharing our highs and lows with seasonal friends.
Re-lighting the fuse to begin again in August.
Books, books and more books.
I love this time of year! As part of Classical
If you are new to homeschooling perhaps you are wondering what all the fuss about Practicum is.
Here are my top 5 reasons why you should attend a local Practicum whether you are part of Classical Conversations or not.
1. Being around like-minded people.
Homeschooling can be a very lonely job which can cause you some discouragement. Practicum is a place where you can sharpen your sword with other homeschooling parents. You can realize you are not alone in this journey and surround yourself with a great cloud of witnesses.
2. Sharpen your sword.
Most of us who teach our children classical were ourselves public school kids so its easy to fall back into what we know. By mid-winter, the workbooks come back out and our zest for reading aloud has gone missing. We need to be reminded how to classically educate our kids, and Practicum is that place. Whether your student is in the beginning Grammar stages or late into Rhetoric there is something for you to take away.
3. Practicum is for Classical Christian Educators.
There are a lot of conferences you can go to throughout the summer for homeschooling. Practicum is specific to Classical Christian Education. We are laser focused on the Trivium and how it applies to teach your student to learn anything. The kid’s camps emphasize what we do all year in Logic, Rhetoric, Speech, Debate and more.
4. Kids camp.
Practicum is not just for the parents, but there are camps directed for the kids to practice Classical Education. Camps range from Speech, Teaching the Classics, Map drawing, Trigonometry, and Science just to name a few. So while you are in the main room learning how to teach classically your kids are enjoying a classically taught mini class with trained tutors.
For 3 days you get to invest in your homeschool listing to the Classical Model and applying it to anything. You get 3 days to meet other Classical educators and ask all the questions you have. 3 days of laughter, prayer, and resolve. All for free (to the parent).
So what if you are not in Classical Conversations?
I personally would tell you to come. Come and hear what a Classical Christian Education looks like. How is it different from the one so many of us received? See if homeschooling is a fit for you, and stay because our communities are unlike anything you’ve seen before. But don’t be surprised if you end up liking what you hear.
If you are going to a Practicum near you I’d love to know where you are. Please leave me a comment below with the location of your Practicum.
I’ll see you in Northern California. 🙂
