“Lady Elisabeth Kerr is a keeper of secrets. A Highlander by birth and a Lowlander by marriage, she honors the auld ways, even as doubts and fears stir deep within her.”
“Here Burns My Candle” is a rich historical book that I could not put down. Lady Elisabeth is the main charachter living with her husbands family, which includes a mother-in-law, sister-in-law and her husband. She is not favored among the family because of her mediocure past, but her husband stands behind her past and future.
Her beliefs in the auld ways and her political favor is tested when the city of Edinburgh is overtaken by the rebel army coming for the crown. The rebel army she supports and wins the heart of her husband and family. The decisions they make change the corse of their lives forever.
Her mother-in-law is completely in love with her sons, tollerates her daughter-in-laws, and is favored by everyone in Edinburgh. After the rebel army arrives she finds herself alone and in the company of only her daughter-in-laws. Her future is unsure and everyone is against her choices.
Both women struggle with faith. One is seeking who she is and the other is trying to remember what she believes. Both women will have to wait to see where their choices will ultimatly leave them.
This book is rich in “love, betrayal, loss and redemption.” a perfect mix for a book that you will not be able to put down.
