What is a hobby? According to a Google search it meansan activity done regularly in one’s leisure time for pleasure.“her hobbies are reading and gardening”
synonyms: pastime, leisure activity, leisure pursuit;
So it would seem by that definition I have a few, and I would like to share them with you over the next week. In the spirit of a new month, and new beginnings I’d like to introduce you to a health hobby.
Now I never would have considered myself a “dancer”
but these classes and breakdown of dances lets me think I am, for an hour everyday.
Dancebody is a live class format in New York City but a few years ago the owner began their streaming program. Every month streamers get access to a handful of new classes that have been instructed right from the New York studio. You feel like you are there in class and with as much Instagramming as these girls do you never feel lost or alone in your own home.
Their classes have a few levels. Signature class is for those of us less experienced with dance and or new to Dancebody. Full Out is for the experienced dancer or for someone who is very familiar with Dancebody. Each class is about 50+ minutes, 40 minutes of dancing and 15 minutes, or so, of sculpting on a mat. There are classes just for sculpting, which you could do everyday, as they use little to no resistance besides your own body weight, Thera bands, and 2lb D weights.
Wait I am not done! There are Follow Along classes which are for anyone who is bashful about routine dances and just needs to move. Express has a bit of everything in a shorter time frame, and Level 10 is a mash up of Full Out classes from time past. Not to mention private sculpting classes, stretching, and breakdowns so you too can be awesome.
Sounds to good be true doesn’t it? Here is the caveat to everything I mentioned, and that is you HAVE to keep an open mind when learning something new. The new dances can be frustrating at times as you are working through them and your butt can burn so bad in ways you had no idea it could but there are so many benefits. One of my favorites is that, because dancing requires so much of your attention you have no head space to think about the laundry, the dishes, whats for dinner, did you return that call. You can push play and literally forget everything for an hour, an
d to me that is priceless. I know I am stronger both mentally and physically, my tennis game is stronger thanks to the movements in dance, and I look forward to dancing almost everyday.
So when I think of a hobby that I do regularly and for leisure then I believe Dancebody fits that description, for me.

Forgive me for taking an extra long time to write this post but I wanted to be able to give you a good answer as to why, how, and what does the future look like.
I watched a documentary entitled “The Science of Fasting: Sylvie Gilman, Thierry de Lestrade,” and I particularly payed attention to the part where they talked about our bodies having two separate gas tanks, like a hybrid. One gas tank for bursts of energy and one for long term energy. The short bursts runs on glucose from sugar and protein. The long term tank runs on ketones from fat and fat stores. After one day of fasting your body begins to use up the short burst gas tank and after three days it begins to use the long term storage. Now some of us, me include, have a lot of reserve that never seems to go anywhere, so my goal for three days was to get my body to where it was only burning fuel from fat.
The documentary had patients who they observed at a retreat for water fasting where they spent upwards of 3 weeks doing a water fast. These patients were carefully monitored by doctors, so I can’t see this kind of experiment working in my favor at home. Three days seemed like a long enough time to prime the pump. 🙂
Small daily notes:
Day one of the water fast wasn’t as bad as I had feared. I spent most of the day outside with my laptop and a 64oz bottle of water. It was nice not having to prepare myself food or wonder what would be healthy enough to eat. My family was completely supportive and took care of themselves for the most part. The kids made themselves breakfast and lunch and my husband helped with dinner. At first the idea of fasting at home among my family who still needed to eat sounded like torture, but we all danced well together.
Day two and I woke up with a growling stomach, but a large glass of water silenced that for the most part. All I could think about on day two was what I wanted to eat when I was done. I was consumed by blogs and websites helping me navigate back into eating. I discovered that to keep my fat being the primary fuel source I would need to eat healthy fat and plenty of green veggies. So I planned to make a big pot of cabbage soup full of rich fat topped with an avocado.

I found I had pretty good energy on day two, but I chose not to workout because I didn’t want to completely tick my body off. I felt like one project at a time was a good balance. The kids, dog, and I did enjoy our walks and afternoon tennis was enough.
Day three and I had an event to attend all day with breakfast and lunch being served. I was pretty nervous to be around other people and answer all the questions as to why I wasn’t eating. Amazingly I was late to breakfast and I had an emergency that called me away from he event at lunch so I really never had to speak about what I was doing with anyone that day and I was completely distracted from food. Into the evening of day three I decided I was done and broke my fast with that awesome soup I had been dreaming about.
As I’m sure you can guess three days can hardly fix 15+ years of damage, but I believe I’ve been given a whole new perspective.
- I didn’t believe that I could fast from food for a day let alone three, so what else can I do that I thought impossible?
- I’ve learned that being hungry is NOT an emergency! Did you hear that??? No more “hangry” in my vocabulary. If I have chosen to eat something that has awoken the sugar dragon then it is not hunger that has my freaking out its sugar and it will pass or be flushed out with a lot of water.
- I am researching intermittent fasting and the benefits of it, and when I do eat I try to eat fat with veggies.
- I sleep well
- Workout with energy
- My joints hurt less, and my back feels lubed up
There are a lot of bodies in this world and a lot of noise telling us how to take care of them. I am trying to listen to what my body wants and right now its bone broth and avocados. 🙂
I will encourage you to watch the documentary “The Science of Fasting” and do some research yourself by experimenting and listening to your body. And with any extreme diet change always check with your doctor if you have preexisting problems.

I know what your going to say, “I don’t have time to workout!” “where do I start?” “I don’t like getting sweaty!” I completely get all of these excuses, but here are a
fivesix ways to get moving more and doing something healthy for yourself and your family.
- Be accountable to someone. Last fall I bought a Fitbit so I could play along in the challenges my friends were doing. Every week my friends and I participate in a “work week hustle” on the Fitbit app which keeps me accountable to a whole group of people who can see how much or how little I’m moving. Now you don’t have to go out and buy anything, you could join an online group that is just for accountability, or you can start one yourself. Being accountable to someone other then yourself or your husband can be very motivating.
- There is no right time to workout. There are seasons in a moms life and those seasons dictate free time. I have tried every time and came to the conclusions that I hate morning workouts, and after lunch is to late in the day, therefore I had to come up with a system to fit in my workout and homeschooling. The best time of day for me is between 8-9am so I schedule my kids some independent work during that time and some days they do it without complaining and some days they are cleaning their rooms quietly until I’m done. Does this happen every day? No, but I try to get 3000 steps in doing one workout.
- Get your kids involved. Some days I can’t get a workout done alone so we lace up our shoes and head outside for a walk. Now the dog loves this and occasionally I get complainants from the kids but rarely so it is a win for me and my steps.
- Free classes. Who doesn’t like free? I have found some great classes on YouTube for free. BeFit is a channel that hosts all ranges of videos from Jillian Michales shred to ballet classes. When I need a kick start I’ll go there and just do something that looks fun.
- Just do it! Nike definitely has the corner on that truth, but it needs to be said more often. Just get moving. Moving more develops stronger bodies and stronger bodies are more confident. Bathing suit season is approaching and your kids need you to be in the water with them playing, and the fastest way to feeling better in a bathing suit is becoming a stronger person.
- Find something you love doing and do it! Even if your old, tired, etc…do that one activity you have been wanting to try or retry. For me this has been dancing. I have never taken an official dance class with pink tights and a black liatard because it was never an option. Thanks to social media and the ability to stream workouts I can dance without pink tights (because no one needs to see that) like no one is watching. I am addicted to Dancebody, which is a dance class online or if you live in New York they are there in person. Try them out for 3 days free (code is on their site), you will be so thankful you did.

Its been 13 years plus 9 months that I have been overweight and struggling.
Over the years I have tried, Beachbody, Shakeology, Weight Watchers, Keto, Whole30, starving, and lately its been the “grace” diet. Oh you have never heard of the “grace” diet? I am sure you have. You know as New Testament Christians, we know a thing or two about Grace, and wether we admit it or not we like to use it as an excuse for not giving ourselves boundaries. Paul did say everything is permissible within reason (I don’t know the address off hand).
Therefore I have been living without boundaries. Completely free to eat and drink what I like when I want it, which as you can imagine has its side affects. Some of the most notable side affects have been a slow increase every year on my scale, tired, joint pain, uncomfortableness in my clothes, workouts are less effective, and an overall yuck feeling.
Hey! I thought by eating what I want and throwing out the towel to boundaries was somehow going to make me forget I have a health problem and instead I found myself skipping through the tall grass of denial.
I don’t want another plan or quick fix. What I want is live my best life eating what makes me the most productive I can be. I know from experience that clean eating is the best way to describe what my body wants. Whole foods, healthy fats, lean meat and a lot of water.
Today I started with a smoothie made with Green super food, 2 raw (fresh from my moms house) eggs, half a banana, 6oz pineapple juice and blend. It was delicious! But the truth of the matter is breakfast has never been an issue for me. I can’t say the extra weight has come from my morning meal. My challenge will be snacking and dinner. With DINNER in capital letters. I love munching on refined carbs, chasing it with a beautiful red wine, and then eating all of dinner.
Heres to today and beginning to construct some very necessary boundaries that will keep my diet from going off the rails.
